Whewww! IT'S DONE!!!

Many of the things done in this were redundant for me since I work in the IT world.

But, the access and opportunity to see "how" librarians have to complete their work, interact with a changing Patron population and technology is insightful for me.

If any of the participants need assistance with the technology, please send me a email, I will do what I can to help them to use/play with the stuff they encounter.

Audio books

If I cannot move a downloaded book from one player to another the same as moving a CD or Cassette tape - then audio books are not suitable for my purposes.

Podcasting

I really think podcasting is in it's "infant form" currently. My reasoning for this is that there are as many formats for casting as there are manufactures of the product.

Sony, Apple and others "coerce" you into there product, but restrict your access to the content. Now this applies to previously recorded content for music as well as books on disk/tape.

Short of reading a book into a recorder, you cannot move a recorded book from one player to another easily. In the old days Cassette Tapes let you move your stuff from one player to another without problem, but, since the publisher, distributor wants their little piece out of the cost, it turns me off to podcasting.

Unless of course I am the author of the content, then I want my piece of the pie also.

Web Docs

This is an "ok" tool for those who cannot afford a full featured Office Suite. However, Open Office (a free Open Source product) is available that competes with MS Office (and will read and edit the MS Office documents too).

Wiki's

I don't like WIKI's! While they can be informative, to me, they are a source for misinformation. In some cases, albeit very small, the information entered is inaccurate or intentionally incorrect. And, since once the information is posted, it can be viewed, edited, quoted, etc. there is very little that can be done to "retrieve" inaccurate information once it is published.

But, to hedge my statement, a wiki is a place to start to gather information, but, confirm, confirm, confirm. Just because it is on a site, does not mean it is accurate.

Libraries Learning 2.0
I read each of the links. I found most of the information very to the point. However, the one that most makes sense was the "iceberg theme" (http://www.oclc.org/nextspace/002/2.htm).

As the technology to gather and maintain information has changed, libraries have remained - for the most part - the "Medieval Castle" of our time. They collect books it seems that as the population increases, has little or no interest in reading. But would prefer to watch a movie or "surf the web".

Let me pose a thought - If I read a book a week, BUT, do not surf the web in that time, will I have "read" more or less than if I had surfed for that same week. I would venture to say that, I, myself, would probably read more on the web than in a book. I find I cannot "make" the time to read a book, but I can surf, 5 - 10 minutes, several times a day, but have difficulty reading a book, even if it is about any of my most enjoyable interests. But, surfing and reading a multitude of interests, for me, that is more relaxing than a book.

Attended the Senior League Little League World Series in Roxanna, Delaware. Great to watch kids play.

BTW - San Antonio, TX won 8-0 in 7 Innings over the Central team from Indiana.

Lifelong learning was something I had not thought about. But, after thinking about it, I have enjoyed everything I have "learned" and when "teaching" or passing it on, helps to keep what you learn clear and always available when needed.

Easiest - Teaching and Mentoring
I currently teach computers and technology to upto 3 teens a year in an informal leaning program where they have "hands on" building and troubleshooting computers. After the teaching I make myself available to help them with the bumps in the road as they begin increase their knowledge of computers and technology. I mentor several young adults, mostly newly married or troubled kids that have had difficulty growing up.

Hardest - Goals
I find I have a great deal of difficulty setting goals, I can achieve them once they are set by myself or others, but deciding what to focus in on and doing just one thing is difficult.

Hi Y'all

I need your input. I am planning a LATI Project with the intent to help Staff and Patrons to better manage and maintain their data (Word, Pictures and other documents).

Please post how you store your files - one BIG GIANT folder, or separate folders with things detailed. Do you maintain backups or just hope that nothing breaks.

Please post how/what you do, I will incorporate your ideas into "Best Practice Plan" and make it available after my LATI project is completed.
